Char Dham Yatra Overview

Char Dham Yatra is considered a very sacred pilgrimage in Hinduism. All the four holy dhams of Hinduism are located in the Garhwal Chaitra region in the lap of the Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand. The journey starts from Yamunotri Dham which is situated in Uttarkashi district, after this the next stop is Gangotri Dham from where the holy river Ganges originates. After this, the devotees go to Kedarnath Dham for the darshan of Baba Kedar Ji and after having a spiritual experience from the Panchmukhi incarnation of Lord Shiva, the pilgrims then set out for the next leg of their journey.

The last stop of the holy pilgrimage is Badri Chaitra, located on the banks of the life-giving Alaknanda river at Shri Badrinath Dham, one of the 24 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, where the Badrinarayan form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped.

Sri Kedarnath Dham

Kedarnath Temple is one of the Char Dhams and is a major religious place. It is located in Rudrapraag of Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. According to Hindu Puranas, the Pandavas built a temple of Lord Shiva in Dwapar Yug to get salvation from the sin of fratricide in the Mahabharata war, which is known as Shri Kedarnath Dham. Here Lord Shiva appeared to the Pandavas in the form of a vine, but this temple was lost due to the ravages of time. Later, a temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, which remained covered with snow for 400 years.

Every year a large number of devotees visit Shri Kedarnath Dham to have darshan of Lord Shiva. To reach the temple, devotees have to walk about 17 km from Gaurikund to Kedarnath, which takes about 4-5 hours, which can also be covered with the help of horses, mules and palanquins. The entire route of this joyful and exciting journey is full of amazing views. The famous Kedarnath Dham temple is situated on the banks of the holy Mandakini river at an altitude of about 3584 meters above sea level. On one side of the temple is 22000 feet high Kedarnath, on the other side is 21600 feet high Kharchkund and on the third side is 22750 feet high Bhartkund mountain and at the same time there is the confluence of 5 holy rivers (Mandakini, Saraswati, Swarnagauri and Kshirganga), some of which have become extinct at present.

After the darshan of Baba Kedar, devotees can make their journey even more memorable and unforgettable by enjoying the other famous places around Kedarnath valley (Trijuginarayan Temple, Gaurikund, Bhairav Temple, Kalimath, Tungnath, Sonprayag, Ukhimath, Chopta, Vasukital Lake, Chandrashila etc.).
